Better Work is a unique partnership between the UN’s International Labour Organization (ILO)and the World Bank Group’s International Finance Corporation (IFC). Launched in February 2007, the nation aims to improve compliance with labour standards and competitiveness in global supply chains. Better Work involves the development of both global tools and country level projects. The focus is on developing scalable and sustainable solutions, which build cooperation between government,employer and worker organizations, and international buyers. Improving compliance with labour standards in global supply chains is an important part of a pro-poor development strategy. Ensuring workers’ rights and entitlements are protected helps todistribute the benefits of trade. Better Work supports enterprises inimplementing the ILO core international labour standards and national labourlaw. This helps enterprises compete in global markets where many buyers demandcompliance with labour standards from their suppliers. Improved labour standardcompliance also helps enterprises be more competitive through higherproductivity and quality. These benefits help build the business case andsupplier support for improved labour standard compliance.In 2011 theBetter Work Indonesia country program became operational with a view to makingits services available to enterprises in the garments and footwear sector ofIndonesia. It currently works with 151 enterprises.By beginning of2017, Better Work Indonesia (BWI) will establish an independently operatingfoundation and the delivery of core services will be implemented by thisFoundation with quality oversight provided by Better Work staff in the ILOJakarta office and at the global level. 

This position will mainly support Better Work Indonesiawith (1) the development and implementation of a communication and knowledgesharing strategy (2) engagement with buyer representatives at the national andregional level. SupervisionThe Officer issupervised and guided by the Chief Technical Advisor. Guidance and advice ontechnical or procedural aspects of the work will be provided as needed.Judgement, initiative and creativity are required in translating project toolsand approaches with tripartite stakeholders. Work outputs will be overseen bythe Chief Technical Advisor for technical soundness and appropriateness.

  • - Develops and implements a BWI communications and knowledge sharing strategy, in line with Better Work’s global messaging and approach, whilst taking into account national priorities and audiences.
  • - Collects and drafts case studies, articles and feature stories that highlight the impact of BWI for use by the programme, the ILO, the IFC as wellas donors and partners.
  • - Overseas the preparation of quality written and visual content for BWI promotional materials, such as flyers, presentations and videos, in line withthe new Better Work visual brand and messaging.
  • - Helps develop and maintain the BWI website and social media accounts, inline with Better Work standards, policies and messaging.
  • Engages with the media through, for example, the drafting of on-message press releases, the organisation of press conferences, following-up on journalist enquiries, and tracking media coverage of BWI and the garment industry in Indonesia.
  • Liaises with BWI colleagues, the ILO Jakarta Communication Officer, the Better Work Global Communications Team and Better Work communications focal points around the world, in support of effective national and global communications and knowledge sharing.
  • Ensures proper communication structures are in place and utilised to contribute to the prevention of crisis where possible.
  • Managing relationships with local and/or regional representatives of brands and vendors to build trusting and cooperative relationships.
  • Managing zero tolerance protocol for buyers, including Inform buyers and vendors about strikes in factories, and labour unrest, which may impact to buyer’s image.
  • Responds to buyers’ and vendors’ queries in a timely manner, including those on assessment, progress and public synthesis reports.
  • Manages quarterly meeting/call with buyers representatives, with support from enterprise advisors and the team leader.
  • Sends out a monthly media/news update from local news to all buyers partners.
  • Follow up on buyers’ subscription forms and payment of their subscription fee.
  • Leads the organization of Indonesia Buyers’ forum, involve buyers’ in the development of the Buyers’ Forum Agenda, prepare summary notes.

Education University degree in communication, human resource management, business management, adult education, international development, law or other relevant fields, or equivalent in experience. Experience At least one to two years of professional experience in a relevant field. Familiarity with Global Supply Chains and factory environment, and/or exposure to the Indonesian garment industry are an advantage.
Excellent command of English and Bahasa Indonesia.Competencies
